The Food Analytical Service laboratory (FASL) was established 50 years after the creation of the Institute of Nutrition, now the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology. It started from a handful of analysts and limited facilities to a well-trained, technically competent staff, housed in a fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The FASL is the pioneering laboratory generating and compiling Food Composition Tables of Philippine foods. From the basic generation of data on nutrient composition and aflatoxin data of foods, the Food Composition Laboratory now the FASL, extends its analytical services to the needs of the Philippine food industry and various stakeholders in the country in the areas of food analysis and technical consultancy.

To fulfill this commitment, the FASL
1. Establishes and implements a laboratory Quality System that meets International Standards based on ISO/IEC17025;
2. Harnesses qualified, trained and competent technical personnel;
3. Employs validated/verified test methods and quality assurance measures in the performance of analysis;
4. Uses calibrated and well-maintained measuring equipment, and;
5. Requires laboratory personnel concerned with testing activities to familiarize themselves with the quality documentation and implement the policies and procedures in their work.
