The Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) received the DOST Best Institute Award for having the highest number of Utility Model Registration Awardees for 2019. The seven (7) utility models are: Instant Food from Taro, Complementary Snack Foods with Carrots using High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT), Thermally Processed Instant Lumpia (Spring Roll) Sauce, Gluten-Free Pasta Noodles, Ready to Drink Beta-Carotene-Rich juices, Process of Making Boiled-Dehulled Sorghum Flour, and Acid-modified Sorghum Starch and Process of making the same.
Utility Model, according to the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL), is any technical solution to a problem in any field of human activity which is new and industrially applicable. It may or may not have an inventive step.
DOST-FNRI has been recognized for this category for three consecutive years (2017-2019). Also, DOST International Publication Award was given to 17 DOST-FNRI studies. The awardees received plaques and certificates together with cash incentives.
The awards were given by the Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST), the country’s premier recognition and scientific advisory body of the Philippines, on December 10, 2019 during the 2019 DOST Intellectual Property Awarding Ceremony at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel, Quezon City.
